Refurbishment of an existing rear extension

The clients were looking for a larger, more sophisticated kitchen and entertaining space with expansive views across the large back garden, together with a hidden back-of-house space.

The proportions of the existing rear extension were changed by reducing the height of the coping, to make the extension feel proportionately more comfortable against the existing Victorian house.  The exterior was clad in narrow strips of stained accoya with secret fixings, providing a marked difference between the original house and new extension.

The new kitchen and entertaining space were designed to be minimal in character, with full height storage on one side and a large central island unit, used for cooking and seating.

The rear part of the kitchen includes a laylight, allowing beautiful coloured light to gently illuminate the internalised space.

The overall result is a minimal, light interior contrasting with a textured dark exterior, whilst providing sensational links to the rear garden.
